Back in 2011, Martin Raish, a librarian at David O. McKay Library at Idaho’s Brigham Young University, stopped updating his “Librarians in the Movies: An Annotated Filmography” available on the Wayback Machine where he lists 550 films that show libraries, librarians, or both, whether as a major plot element or in passing. Below are many of the resources which review libraries (and librarians) in popular culture which I have cited on this blog. It will be updated as much as I can. I am providing these resources for anyone who wishes to pursue this topic further, especially if they want to write about it in either academic journals or other publications. Feel free to suggest further resources either by submitting a form on one of the pages on this website. All the sources are cited using the Notes and Bibliography Chicago citation format for the sources used on the blog, specifically the Bibliography citation rather than the Notes citation. [1] I have some made some revisions to that citation style as I deem fit, however. As a disclaimer, listing a resource in this bibliography does not mean that I agree with or support what the said resource says. In fact, in a number of cases, I disagree with what the the sources say.

Notes
[1] Apart from these sources, please see sites like “Images of Libraries in Popular Culture,” “You Don’t Look Like A Librarian,” “Resistant Librarian,” and “Reel Librarians” (about librarians in movies) I haven’t seen it, but the 2007 film, “The Hollywood Librarian: A Look at Librarians Through Film” is probably worth watching. Also, the movie lists of English-language films, tv shows, actors, shorts, documentaries, and foreign-language films featuring libraries and librarians, assembled by Jennifer Snoek-Brown, is a great resource, as is the articles she brought together which mainly look at librarians on the silver screen. Snoek-Brown also lists types of librarians and archivists portrayed (and those which are “atypical” characters), more lists of films with librarians and/or archivists, and the best/worst portrayals of libraries (and librarians). These are all in film, mind you.
[2] Keer and Carlos commented on public perceptions of librarianship, with increased interest during the 21st century. As Keer and Carlos points out, librarians are often shown as middle-aged White female characters who wear buns and shush protagonists, whether they are shown as hipsters, “sexy,” young, “cool” or curmudgeonly. The first step forward the goal of Keer and Carlos to counter the effects of such depictions, apart from working toward social justice for marginalized groups in society, is to point out the stereotypes themselves, in order to change public perceptions of the library profession, while stressing positive depictions at the same time.
